Renamo leader's guards released from police custody

Police freed eight men of the Renamo guard, arrested on Friday during the invasion,by police, of Afonso Dhlakama's residence in Beira,Sofala, in central Mozambique.Daniel Macuacua, spokesman for the Sofala Police said on Friday night that the police had freed the Renamo leaders guards - who had been taken from Afonso Dhlakama's residence in an armored vehicle of the Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) and subsequently transported to the Police command cells -there are no criminal proceedings against the group. "During the operation there were no arrests as such, but some retentions and all the people who had been in the house were released, all of them last night, "said Daniel Macuacua, no details on the operation and the reasons for retention of guards of the National Resistance of Mozambique (Renamo), the largest party opposition. Special Forces of the Mozambican police- Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) and Special Operative Group (GOE) -raided Friday morning the house of the president of Renamo, a neighborhood elite in Beira and arrested opposition party guards. The invasion of Afonso Dhlakama's house in the neighborhood of Palmeiras came a day after he reappeared from the mountains of Gorongosa, after nearly two weeks in an unknown place after he disappeared on 25 September in Gondola, Manica,during clashes between a Renamo guards and the forces of defense and security. However, Renamo confirmed today to Lusa the release of men of its guard, who continue to protect unarmed,the household of Afonso Dhlakama.
