Renamo denounces new clashes today in the center of the country.

"This morning, today, October
02, combined forces,
in seven
vehicles, reached Chitaka, town
of Mpindanhanga, Gondola
district, and attacked the local population, accusing
them of protecting the
president ,Afonso Dhlakama ",
said today, at a press
conference, the spokesman for
Renamo, Antonio Muchanga.

These movements, continued
Muchanga, resulted in clashes
with the forces of Renamo.

According to the spokesman of
the opposition party, the
alleged and systematic bombings and attacks on the
leader of the movement and
other party members may result in a higher proportion of
confrontation with
unpredictable consequences.

António Muchanga said Afonso
Dhlakama is well but excused
to indicate his whereabouts,
after having said in previous
interviews that he was
somewhere in Manica province

Dhlakama has not been seen in
public since the 26th of September when his
caravan was involved in an
incident in Gondola district, the
party considered to have dealt
with an attack of the defense and security force.

The government said,
meanwhile, that they moved to
the site just to restore order,
accusing the leader of the
Renamo escort of having killed
the driver of a passenger car

Renamo claimed that this
incident resulted in seven dead
among the entourage of
Dhlakama and dozens of the
alleged attackers, number well
below the 24 released by the government, 23 members of
the opposition and a civilian.

On Tuesday, police announced
the opening of a criminal case
on the murder of the driver of
the transport vehicle, against
Renamo leader whose
spokesman has already reacted, considering that it is a
"farce" and questioning who
will accuse the authors of the
alleged 23 deaths of
opposition men.

This is the second incident in
less than two weeks involving
the leader of Renamo, after
last September 12 when
Dhlakama's entourage was
attacked near Chimoio, also in Manica province.

At the time, Frelimo accused
Renamo of having simulate
dthe ambush, while police
denied their involvement,
adding that they wereinvestigating.

In an interview with weekly
newspaper Savana, the defense
minister, Salvador Mtumuke,
also denied the involvement of
the army.
