Gorvenment vows to continue colllection of firearms in illegal hands.
THE GOVERNMENT has vowed, yesterday in Parliament, to do everything so that all firearms that are in unauthorized hands are collected coercively or voluntarily surrendered to the Defense and Security Forces, ''the rightful custodian and who is responsible for ensuring public order, security and tranquility of citizens''.
The position was reiterated by the Minister of the Interior, Jaime Basilio Monteiro, during the session of Parliament and in response to a question to the gorvenment by Renamo about the legality and morality of executive actions to resort to the Defence Forces and Security (FDS) for allegedly seeking to assassinate the leader of this political force, Afonso Dhlakama, while noising willingness to dialogue with him.
According to the minister, many repeated cases of use of firearms against civilians by members of the Renamo leader's guard justify the need for complete removal of threats for the safety of people and the state, driving the FDS to strengthen the process of firearms collection in illegitimate hands.
"This process will continue until the last firearm in unauthorized hands is collected coercively or voluntarily surrendered to the rightful custodian, ie the forces of defense and security of the Mozambican state, for it is they duty to ensure order, security and public tranquility of all citizens, "said the minister, inoder for all to remember that the possession and use of weapons of war is the exclusive prerogative of the state.
He added that this underlines the Government's determination to proceed with the disarmament and collection of war artifacts and other such objects in the hands of citizens not legally authorized entities for this purpose.
